It is the 15th century. European nations, driven by overpopulation, warfare and greed, are starting to explore the world. Most of them seek new land to conquer and treasure to find. Civilizations in the rest of the world are unaware of the coming invasion from the sea. Will you join the conquerors and make your nation the richest in the world? Or will you turn the tide of conquest and change the course of history?
This scenario, adapted from the one found in Civilization Conquests expansion pack, starts players in the year 1490 A.D. It allows the to experience the tremendous changes that accompanied European colonization of the Americas and West Africa. European nations, coming out of a period of feudal warfare, has acquired new seagoing technologies that them to cross wide oceans. At the same time, civilizations and nations in the Americas are growing and developing, but haven’t had access to the latitudinal trade networks that have benefited Europeans. Players can play as a major European power to understand the population pressure that led to expansion, or they can play as an indigenous American civilization as they try to resist colonialism.
Geography: The Atlantic and the Americas including Western Europe and West Africa.
Events: The European discovery and colonization of the Americas. The Enlightenment. The Reformation.
Privateer– A privately owned ship authorized during wartime by a nation attack enemy ships. In Civilization III, you can attack opponent naval units without triggering war.
Frigate – Fast, long-ranging warships that were frequently used for raiding missions and patrols.
Protestant Reformation – A movement in the early 1500s that attempted to reform the Catholic Church. When many in this movement were dissatisfied with the lack of change, they broke away from the Catholic Church and formed their own churches.
Counter-Reformation – A period of revival and reform in the Catholic Church in the late 1500s. It was begun as a response to the turmoil of the Reformation.
Scientific Revolution – A period beginning in the 1500s when scientists made a number of tremendous new discoveries and established new rules for scientific investigation like the Scientific Method.
Colony- A foreign territory under the control of a nation. European nations began setting up colonies in the Americas and Africa in order to take valuable resources from the regions and keep the native people under control.
Mercantalism – A theory about the prosperity of nations in which governments protect an economy by encouraging the shipment of goods to other countries and discouraging the shipment of goods into the country.
