Dawn of civilizationIt is the dawn of civilization.  The first groups of people are beginning to settle from nomads into stable cities.  What has become known as the “Fertile Crescent,” modern day Iran in the Middle East, is the site for several of these first groups.  You may begin as the Egyptians, the Babylonians, Medes, Phoenicians, Sumerians, or the Hittites.  Who will first master the Iron Age and be the maker of laws, the builder of wonders, the author of writing, and the creator of Civilization?

Purpose:
This introduction scenario allows new players to Civilization III to learn the game while playing as one of the first cultures to develop into a stable “civilization.”  Everyone has heard of the Greeks, but how many know about their predecessors, the Medes?  This scenario should also help players contextualize that before the golden ages of Rome and Greece, many other peoples flourished in new civilizations throughout the world.
Having partners play together will help the learning process, and having a knowledgeable helper near at hand is essential to speedy success. Early gameplay consists largely of fending off pesky barbarian raiders.  Soon the player will encounter neighboring civilizations and have the choice of peace or war.  Befriend your neighbors and let trade flourish, or put them to the sword!

Beginner’s F.A.Q.
Q: What affects the rate at which cities grow?  Do cities grow faster near rivers or in mountains?
A: Cities grow faster in grasslands and near river valleys. Mountains and plains have slower rates of growth, and desert areas offer no growth at all.

Q: How do you make sure new cities grow?
A: Build cities in a growth-friendly terrain area. Make sure they don’t share land squares with any other cities, as cities can’t support themselves if other cities are using their food.

Q: My units move too slowly. How can I make them move faster?
A: There are a few ways to speed up your units. One way to help them move faster is to build roads between your cities using a Worker. Another is to discover the Horseback Riding technology and make Horsemen. A third way is to use boats like Curraghs and Galleys to move across ocean squares.
